"Do not be deceived: 'Bad company corrupts good character.'" - 1 Corinthians 15:33

What Are Narcissistic Flying Monkeys?

In understanding harmful relational dynamics, the term "flying monkeys" describes individuals who become unwitting accomplices to a narcissist's destructive agenda. These are people who act on behalf of someone with narcissistic tendencies, often without realizing they're being manipulated to cause harm to others.

The concept parallels what we see in Scripture when Haman used others to carry out his genocidal plot against Yahweh's people (Esther 3:12-13). Just as Haman dispatched messengers throughout the kingdom to execute his evil plan, modern narcissists use "flying monkeys" to spread their influence and control.

These individuals become extensions of the narcissist's reach, helping to spread gossip and slander, spy on targets, or serve as intermediaries in manipulation schemes. The narcissist dispatches these agents to enact punishment on their targets through guilt-tripping, twisting truth, gaslighting, and even threats or violence.

How Flying Monkeys Operate: A Biblical Perspective

Flying monkeys typically fall into two categories: the innocent, who are genuinely deceived by smooth words and false narratives, and the willing participants, who knowingly collaborate for personal gain. Many are simply well-meaning people who have been fed a carefully crafted story designed to paint the narcissist as the victim.

In Scripture, we understand that evil can work through others to accomplish its destructive purposes. The narcissist, operating from pride and self-exaltation, uses manipulation techniques that echo the serpent's deception in Eden—mixing truth with lies to accomplish harmful goals.

A Biblical Response to Flying Monkeys

As followers of Yahshua the Messiah, our response must be grounded in both Old Testament wisdom and the Messiah's teachings:

1. Exercise Biblical Discernment

Yahshua taught us to be "wise as serpents and innocent as doves" (Matthew 10:16). We must develop the spiritual ability to distinguish between those operating in truth versus those under deception.

Scripture teaches us: "The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps" (Proverbs 14:15). We must not be naive about the reality of manipulation and deception in our communities.

2. Maintain Healthy Biblical Boundaries

Scripture establishes clear boundaries in all areas of life. Just as the Israelites were commanded not to move their neighbor's boundary stones (Deuteronomy 19:14), we must maintain emotional and relational boundaries.

From a biblical perspective, narcissistic behavior violates the fundamental commandment to "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18). The narcissist consistently disobeys this by prioritizing self above others' well-being.

3. Respond with Grace but Firmness

When dealing with flying monkeys, remember that many are genuinely deceived. Respond with loving-kindness when possible, but don't compromise truth for false peace.

Proverbs states, "Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful" (Proverbs 27:6). Sometimes loving someone means refusing to enable their harmful behavior or deception.

4. Avoid Becoming a Flying Monkey Yourself

Before confronting others, examine your own heart through honest self-reflection. Are there times when you've been manipulated into carrying out someone else's agenda without proper discernment? Yahshua warns us to "first take the log out of your own eye" (Matthew 7:5).

Protecting Yourself and Others: Practical Biblical Steps

Scripture-Based Approach:

  • Guard Your Speech: Avoid gossip and slander. Don't participate in spreading unverified information that could harm others

  • Document When Necessary: Keep records of harmful interactions as potential witnesses for restoration and accountability

  • Seek Wise Counsel: Find mature believers who can provide Ruach-led counsel grounded in Scripture

  • Prayer and Study: Ground yourself in prayer and biblical study rather than human manipulation

Biblical "Gray Rock" Approach

While secular psychology suggests the "gray rock" method of minimal engagement, we can approach this through biblical wisdom—being "slow to speak" (James 1:19) and not casting our "pearls before swine" (Matthew 7:6). This aligns with the scriptural concept of strategic silence when appropriate.

Restoration and Healing in Messiah

As believers, we're called to participate in the restoration of Yah's creation. This includes:

Pursuing Biblical Restoration

Where possible and safe, we should pursue repentance and restoration in relationships. However, this doesn't mean enabling abusive behavior or sacrificing wisdom for false peace.

Hope and Healing: Your True Identity in Messiah

If you've been targeted by a narcissist and their flying monkeys, remember that your identity is not defined by their opinions or actions but by your covenant relationship with the Almighty through Yahshua the Messiah.

The prophet Isaiah reminds us, "No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Adon, and their righteousness is from Me" (Isaiah 54:17).

You are chosen and beloved by Yah. As Paul writes, "If Yah is for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31).

Moving Forward in Faith

As we navigate relationships with wisdom and understanding, remember that our ultimate goal isn't to win arguments but to walk as lights in this world, representing our Messiah well.

Sometimes this means confronting abuse and manipulation in the spirit of biblical correction; other times, it means quietly removing ourselves from toxic situations in wisdom. The key is seeking Yah's guidance through prayer, Scripture study, and the counsel of wise believers in Messiah.

The fear of the Adon is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding (Proverbs 9:10). Let this be our foundation as we deal with difficult people and challenging situations.

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please reach out to appropriate authorities or counseling professionals.

Understanding the Spiritual Battle

It's important to recognize that narcissistic abuse often has spiritual dimensions. The enemy seeks to destroy Yah's people through division, manipulation, and the twisting of truth. Flying monkeys, whether knowingly or unknowingly, can become tools in this spiritual warfare.

Put on the full armor of Yah (Ephesians 6:11-18) as you navigate these challenging relationships. Remember that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Practical Steps for Support of Those Affected by Narcissist Abuse Within Our Community:

  • Study Scripture to understand Elohim's heart for justice and protection of the vulnerable

  • Support those who have been targeted by narcissistic abuse

  • Refuse to participate in gossip chains or information gathering on behalf of others

  • Pray for wisdom in all relational conflicts
