Have you ever walked away from a conversation feeling like you just spun through a verbal hurricane? You started with a clear point, but somewhere along the way, the topic shifted, the facts blurred, and you were left wondering if you’d imagined the whole thing. That’s not just bad communication—it could be something much deeper.

When you’re talking with a narcissist, you may notice something strange happens: the conversation feels like quicksand. They jump from topic to topic, twist your words, and inject contradictions, and suddenly, you’re lost, doubting what’s true and even questioning your own memory. This confusing verbal mess is often called narcissistic word salad.

The term "word salad" comes from psychology, describing speech that is jumbled and disorganized. In the context of narcissistic abuse, it’s not a mental disorder symptom—it’s a manipulation tactic. The narcissist uses this verbal chaos to avoid accountability, derail important conversations, and keep control. Instead of addressing the actual issue, they weave in irrelevant details, half-truths, and outright fabrications. The result? You’re left frustrated, off-balance, and unsure how to respond.

📌 Quick Signs You’re Hearing Word Salad

  • Endless Topic Switching—The subject changes repeatedly before you can finish a point.

  • Circular Reasoning—The conversation loops back to the same point without resolution.

  • Contradictions—They deny what they said moments ago or change their story mid-discussion.

  • Emotional Bait—They shift the focus to your reaction, making you the problem.

  • Overwhelming Detail—They bury you under irrelevant facts or stories to obscure the truth.

Now, let’s connect this to something deeper. Scripture speaks of the spirit of Leviathan in Job 41 and Isaiah 27:1. Leviathan is portrayed as a twisting serpent, a creature whose very nature is to coil and distort. Many Bible teachers describe the Leviathan spirit as one that “twists communication”—taking what’s said and bending it so the meaning is distorted.

Sound familiar?

When you experience word salad, you’re encountering a communication style that mirrors this twisting. Just as Leviathan coils and contorts, the narcissist’s words tangle and suffocate clarity. What began as a straightforward concern becomes wrapped in so many diversions and contradictions that the truth is barely visible.

From a spiritual perspective, this isn’t just frustrating—it’s a battle over truth itself. John 8:44 reminds us that the enemy is the “father of lies.” Twisted communication is one of his oldest tools, going all the way back to the Garden of Eden: “Did Yah really say…?” The goal is the same—to sow doubt, confusion, and division.

So, how can believers respond?

  1. Stay Anchored in Truth—Just as sailors navigate by a fixed star, keep your mind anchored to what was originally said and what you know to be true. Don’t let emotional bait pull you off course.

  2. Refuse the Spin—Proverbs 26:4 says, “Do not answer a fool according to his folly.” Sometimes the wisest move is not to chase every twisting argument but to calmly state your point once and stand firm.

  3. Pray for Discernment—Ask the Ruach HaKodesh to reveal when communication is being spiritually twisted so you can respond in wisdom instead of frustration.

  4. Guard Your Peace—Philippians 4:7 promises that Yah’s peace will guard your heart and mind. You don’t have to win every argument—you just have to keep your spirit aligned with Him.

The next time you feel words twisting around you like a serpent’s coils, pause. Ask the Adon (Lord) for clarity, anchor yourself in His truth, and refuse to be drawn into the confusion. And if this resonates with you, share it with someone who might be wrestling with the same battle—together, we can shine light where the enemy tries to hide in shadows.
